Dear District Five Resident,
As we move into summer, I am reminded of what makes our community such a special place: the people who dedicate their time, talents, and energy to ensure that our home remains a vibrant, resilient, and welcoming place to live in, now and for generations to come. Over the past few weeks, I had the honor of recognizing the volunteers, organizations, businesses, and community leaders who are making a meaningful difference in San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley. Whether serving on a Commission, advocating for important causes, volunteering at our parks, or keeping our streets clean, I deeply appreciate the time and dedication that so many of you bring—you are truly an inspiration, demonstrating every day what it looks like to build community. Read on to learn more about the inspiring work of volunteers in our district, and other upcoming events, including an invitation to walk with me in the upcoming July 4th parade in Boulder Creek. I hope you will join me for this cherished local tradition! As always, thank you for taking the time to stay engaged. It is an honor to serve as your County Supervisor. In community,

Congressman Jimmy Panetta, California State Assembly Member Gail Pellerin, California State Senator John Laird, and Supervisor Martinez with Valley Women's Club members.
It was my pleasure to speak at the Valley Women’s Club (VWC) 48th Annual Meeting, alongside Congressman Jimmy Panetta, California State Assembly Member Gail Pellerin, and California State Senator John Laird, to celebrate nearly five decades of their service to the community. Since the 1970s, VWC members have championed a range of important issues including environmental protection, disaster preparedness, natural habitat education, social equity and more. Through their advocacy, education, and volunteer leadership, the VWC has made our community a better place to live in. It was a wonderful evening celebrating the past, present, and future of this remarkable organization. I am grateful for their continued contributions to our community.

I was honored to recognize the winners of the 2025 Scotts Valley Community Awards at the annual gala hosted by the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce. I had the privilege of providing each award recipient with a proclamation recognizing their significant and unique contributions to our community. The evening was a special celebration of the individuals, organizations, and businesses, whose dedication and service have helped make Scotts Valley an exceptional place to live and work. It was inspiring to hear the stories of those adults and youth who are going above and beyond to strengthen our community through volunteerism, leadership, advocacy, and civic engagement. Supervisor Martinez with District Five Commissioners at Coffee with Commissioners event at Felton Public Library.
Did you know that District Five has 30 commissioners serving on Santa Cruz County commissions, committees, and advisory boards? These dedicated volunteers are an essential part of our local government—they provide expertise, community insight, and thoughtful recommendations to the Board of Supervisors on issues ranging from housing and transportation to parks, public health, and environmental stewardship. This May, I brought together our District Five Commissioners to thank them for their service. It was a wonderful opportunity to recognize and celebrate the volunteers who serve on our County commissions. I deeply appreciate the hard work and dedication of our Commissioners, and the important role they play in ensuring that District Five residents have a voice in policies and issues that affect our community. If you are interested in serving as a District Five Commissioner, three vacant seats are available. Interested applicants can apply here.

Supervisor Martinez recognizes Quail Hollow Ranch County Park volunteers at Volunteer Appreciation Day.
Quail Hollow Ranch County Park is a special gem in our community, and local volunteers play an essential role in helping to preserve and enhance the park for future generations. In 2025, volunteers contributed more than 4,000 hours of service providing habitat restoration, trial maintenance, educational programs, community events, and other stewardship activities. At Volunteer Appreciation Day, it was my pleasure to recognize and thank the numerous volunteers whose dedication helps protect the park’s unique habitat while creating opportunities for residents and visitors to connect with nature. Supervisor Martinez with volunteers at Pitch In Santa Cruz County event in Boulder Creek.
Thank you to those who participated in the third annual Pitch In Santa Cruz County event! Across the County, more than 700 people took part, including many volunteers from District Five. Together, participants collected approximately 7,000 pounds of trash—a powerful reminder that small actions can make a big difference when we work together. This year, I was happy to join the Boulder Creek Business Association for the Spring Town Sweep. Along with neighbors, business owners, and community volunteers, we spruced up the sidewalks, public spaces, and shared areas throughout downtown Boulder Creek. I am grateful to everyone who donated their time and energy to keep Boulder Creek and our County beautiful and litter free.

Supervisor Martinez in Felton Rembers Parade on Memorial Day weekend.
Over Memorial Day weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Felton Remembers Parade and Covered Bridge Park festival sponsored by the Felton Business & Community Association. This beloved small-town festival is a special event in our community, reflecting the spirit of the San Lorenzo Valley. It was wonderful to see neighbors, families, and community members enjoying the day together. It also provided an opportunity to pause, remember, and express gratitude for those who gave their lives in defense of our freedoms. I was reminded of how much I have to be grateful for, and the sacrifices made by generations of service members to protect the values and opportunities we cherish today.
