Dear Neighbors,
Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen a deeply troubling escalation in federal immigration enforcement across California, including high-profile raids, widespread fear in our communities, and, most disturbingly, the use of military force in civilian neighborhoods.
These tactics cross a line.
When people are afraid to go to work, seek medical care, or send their kids to school, it doesn’t just harm those directly targeted—it hurts all of us. Families live in fear, essential work is left undone, and our shared sense of safety and community breaks down.
As your Supervisor, I want you to know that I hear the fear and frustration—and I share it. And I want to update you on what we’ve done, and what more we must continue to do:
- On June 10, the Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a resolution condemning the use of military force in civilian communities and reaffirming the constitutional rights of all residents. We’re sending this resolution to Governor Newsom, our state and federal representatives, and to local governments throughout California, urging them to join us.
- This week I also joined local leaders from Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito Counties, including elected officials, labor unions, educators, healthcare providers, and business leaders, for a regional press conference standing in support of our immigrant communities.
- In March, the Board of Supervisors awarded $100k to local non-profits to provide free legal consultation and representation for immigrant families as well as “Know Your Rights” workshops.
- Santa Cruz County continues to uphold its sanctuary policies, ensuring access to vital services and protections regardless of immigration status. Learn more here: www.santacruzcountyca.gov/Sanctuary.aspx.
But I want to be honest with you—these actions, while important, are not enough: They don’t stop the raids; they don’t eliminate fear; and they don’t yet deliver the long-term protections immigrant families need and deserve.
What they do is send a message that Santa Cruz County will not be silent in the face of injustice. And they lay the groundwork for broader change across our region, our state, and our country.
I remain committed to doing everything in my power to support our immigrant neighbors, protect access to essential services, and stand up against policies rooted in fear, division, and cruelty.
We’re in this together—and we’re not backing down.
With care and determination,
